Longboat Key Historical Society gets a lease, but with a deadline attached

The Town Commission agreed to give the Longboat Key Historical Society a new lease on its 1930s cottage on the Town Center Green, but chose a two-year term with reporting requirements instead of the five years the society requested. The lease is on the consent agenda for the Monday, Nov. 2 regular meeting.

Dead Winn-Dixie site gets a second life as Sarasota City Commission takes up Midtown Plaza appeal

Sarasota's City Commission is set to hear an appeal Monday at 9 a.m. from the owners of Midtown Plaza, who want the commission to overturn the Planning Board's 3-2 denial of their proposed six-story hotel, apartment building and garage on the site of a former Winn-Dixie. The appeal, filed Sept. 16 by agent Joel Freedman, leaves the project's design unchanged and argues the board had no legal basis to deny it. Freedman asks the commission to hear the case anew and approve the site plan with the six conditions staff recommended in September. Approval of the appeal requires a supermajority of four votes on the five-member commission.
